Smart motorway breakdowns
Recovery from smart motorway sections where there is no permanent hard shoulder.
Broken down on the motorway? Get yourself to safety first, then call us. We recover vehicles from motorways and major roads 24 hours a day.
SureWay provides 24/7 motorway recovery. On smart motorways there may be no permanent hard shoulder, so reaching a safe place matters first. Get behind the barrier where possible, call 999 if you are in a live lane, then call SureWay.
On an ordinary road you can usually wait beside your vehicle. On a motorway you cannot. Traffic is moving at speed, stopping places are limited, and some smart motorway sections have no permanent hard shoulder. That changes what you should do, and it changes how recovery has to be arranged.
If your vehicle has stopped in a live lane, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on and hazards on, and call 999. Do not attempt to leave the vehicle or place a warning triangle on a motorway. Recovery from a live lane is coordinated by the highways authority and the police before any recovery operator can attend.
24/7 support through our service network.
Every call starts with your location, vehicle condition, clear pricing and the safest next step.

SureWay provides car recovery, towing and roadside assistance for motorways, A-roads, city streets, town roads and rural routes.
Knowing your junction number, or the number on the nearest blue driver location sign, is the fastest way for us to find you. Read it out exactly as it appears.
Coverage includes motorway routes, A-roads and connecting roads. Some sections use variable speed limits or have no permanent hard shoulder, so always move to a safe place before arranging recovery.
We also support drivers on major A-roads, bypasses and connecting routes. A road number, nearby town and direction of travel help us locate you quickly.
Every few hundred metres you will see a small blue sign with three lines: the road number, the direction of travel, and the distance in kilometres. That is the most precise position you can give us, and it is what control rooms work from too.
Vehicles that will not restart at motorway services, a filling station, slip road or junction lay-by are safer and more straightforward to reach than vehicles stopped on the carriageway.
Move left towards an Emergency Refuge Area or a slip road if the vehicle is still moving. If you can stop safely and get out on the left, get behind the barrier and stand well back from the carriageway. If you cannot leave the lane you are in, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
Not directly. A live lane has to be closed or made safe by the relevant highways authority and the police first. Call 999, and they will coordinate the road closure. Once the carriageway is safe, SureWay recovers the vehicle.
An Emergency Refuge Area is a marked orange lay-by set back from the running lanes on a smart motorway, usually with an orange SOS telephone. It is the safest place to stop if you cannot leave the motorway. Use the SOS phone to report your position, then call for recovery.
SureWay arranges recovery on motorways and major roads. Tell us the road number, junction, direction of travel and nearest driver location sign so we can dispatch the right team.
If you are on a motorway and your vehicle is in a dangerous position, call 999 first. Using an orange SOS phone connects you directly to the control room and shares your exact position. Call SureWay once you are safe.
Yes. SureWay operates 24 hours a day, every day. Motorway breakdowns at night carry extra risk from poor visibility, so getting behind the barrier and away from the carriageway matters even more.
